Mammy is a survivor. She lives in a “food desert” in the outskirts of Beaumont, Texas. She waited every day for the Salvation Army to deliver a meal to the senior housing unit where she is living out her days. Hurricane Harvey destroyed the stores and restaurants in her neighborhood, and since she doesn’t own a car, she was at the mercy of the emergency organization’s free food program.
Mammy is more than a hurricane survivor. She is 76 years old, and dying of terminal kidney cancer. She is surprisingly at peace with her life and her situation, just thankful for each day she wakes up.
